Human + AI: designing the intelligent African workplace

People should not spend their talent on retrieval, monitoring and re-keying. That is not a defence of jobs. It is a defence of judgment.

A serious conversation about AI at work does not begin with headcount. It begins with the work that currently consumes people who were hired for something else.

Retrieval, routine coordination, constant monitoring, predictable workflows and high-volume information processing are poor uses of human attention. Strategy, empathy, leadership, accountability, creativity, complex judgment and relationship-building are not.

African workplaces often combine all of this in the same role because the systems never took the first category. The officer is the integration layer. The receptionist is the middleware. The teacher is the helpdesk. The loan officer is the document-completeness engine.

Designing an intelligent workplace means taking that integration work seriously enough to instrument it — and leaving the human work with humans. People set the goals. AI accelerates the work. Escalation is not a failure of the system. It is the system working as designed.

This is also why skills programmes belong next to product. An organization that deploys agents without teaching its people how to supervise, query and improve those agents has bought software. It has not changed how it operates. ArtiQua’s Innovation Hubs exist for that reason: the intelligent economy still needs people who can build, test and govern the systems inside it.
